Born in Wheeling, West Virginia in 1954, Grammy winning singer songwriter and multi- instrumentalist Tim O’Brien grew up singing in church and in school. After seeing Doc Watson on TV, he became a lifelong devotee of old time and bluegrass music. Tim started touring nationally in 1978 with Colorado bluegrass band Hot Rize. His songs “Walk the Way the Wind Blows” and “Untold Stories” were bluegrass hits for Hot Rize, and country hits for Kathy Mattea. Soon more artists like Nickel Creek, Garth Brooks, and The Dixie Chicks covered his songs. Over the years, Tim has collaborated with his sister Mollie O’Brien, songwriter Darrell Scott, and noted old-time musician Dirk Powell, as well as with Steve Earle, Mark Knopfler, Dan Auerbach, Sturgill Simpson, and Steve Martin.

Living in Nashville since 1996, O’Brien’s skills on guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and banjo make him an in-demand session player. He tours in a duet setting with his wife Jan Fabricius on mandolin and vocals, and in a band the includes bassist Mike Bub, fiddler Shad Cobb, and Fabricius.  The International Bluegrass Music Association awarded him song of the year in 2006 and named him best male vocalist in 1993 and 2006. He was inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2013 and into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2022.

Ralph Roddenbery is a charismatic, unique and impressionable singer/songwriter who has been part of the Athens and Atlanta music scene for many years. His music presents as a dynamic blend of Americana, roots rock, with a twist of the blues. Through his  captivating lyrics and remarkable stage presence, Ralph  is able to connect with his audience in a way that makes them feel as if they are having a one on one conversation about life. In a review from the Charleston City Paper, Michael Andrews stated that Ralph Roddenbery has an “undeniable knack for tapping into the emotional undercurrent of his songs, many of which are just as likely to make you laugh as they are to cause moistening of the lids all within the same four minutes.”

Holy Locust 2.jpeg

Holy Locust is an American Folk band pushing the boundaries of genre and tradition. With songs ranging from the aggressive and experimental to melodic and anthemic. Their evocative group vocal harmonies ascend over dynamic rhythms and catchy melodies, while orchestral strings  pull and wail. Their genre bending sound is as at home in a listening room or theatre as it is underneath a highway overpass or punk house basement. Holy Locust’s music is a unique and at times haunting statement of defiance against the exploitation of consumer culture.

Far flung from home and steeped in the myriad of their worldly adventures, Holy Locust, in sound, is the embodiment of chaos tamed. Anywhere from street corners in Mexico to pubs in Ireland, they bring a riveting collaboration of acoustic punk, New Orleans jazz, and traditional folk music, carrying with them the folk tradition of resistance and equality.

tani-8.jpg

Tani and the Afrofunkstars are an ever-evolving project featuring a diverse array of traditional instruments and rhythms from West Africa—specifically Wasulu, a region on the border of Mali and Guinea.  Tani Diakite has captured the spirit of Wasulu music in its most colorful arrays, layering blends of funky percussion with soulful vocals and bright, native stringed instruments.

Tani himself plays the Kamale n’goni, a West African ancestor to the banjo. Wasulu music is known to charm the spirits of the animals that Malian hunters sought. With a musical ancestry that helped pave the way for new genres, Wasulu music not only establishes the roots of blues and world music, but also hints at its emerging relatives such as bluegrass and folk. Their sound is an uplifting and almost spiritual force, empowering both listeners and the musicians that Tani inspires to collaborate with. It is another hallmark of the band that each show features different musicians and singers who provide fresh variety to the act. That’s the charm of a live performance of the Afrofunkstars—one never knows what to expect next! But one thing is to be expected: the audience will always be caught up in their spirit, dancing and immersed in the groove.

Formed in 2015 in the dead center of the thriving Midwest roots music scene in Stevens Point, WI, the four members of Dig Deep drew inspiration from their shared appreciation for traditional bluegrass and country music, their love of rock and roll, and their combined decades of hard gigging in the punk/metal scenes, local bars and roadhouses, and regional festivals. Five releases and countless shows later, they have firmly established themselves as an utterly unique and powerful force in the roots world.

With a body of work that showcases their vision, craft, heart, and clout as songwriters and instrumentalists, Dig Deep has earned a reputation for their well-honed and hard-edged sound that goes far beyond bluegrass, as well as their blistering and boisterous live performances that give audiences much more than a string band show.

With roots in swing, country, jazz, and Americana, the band delivers a soulful, high-energy sound that pays tribute to the golden era of American music with the earthy industrial audacity that permeates Chicago-born sound.  Gina Marie and the Golden Bucks was born out of a deep love for classic American roots music and a desire to honor musical traditions while pushing their boundaries. Frontwoman Gina Marie DeGregorio grew up surrounded by jazz and country influences—including her father’s own Midwest showband, The Golden Bucks, whose name the group proudly carries forward.

Formed in Chicago, the band brings together seasoned players from jazz, swing, honky-tonk, and rockabilly scenes. Together, they create a genre-blurring sound that’s equal parts vintage and visceral—tight enough for the bandstand, raw enough for the roadhouse.

Singer/Songwriter/Multi-Instrumentalist Joseph Huber was a founding member of the .357 String Band--a group that, despite its abrupt break-up, still continues to gain popularity and is known as one of the most influential groups in the recent insurgent underground country and bluegrass movement. Having moved from .357, Huber has honed his songwriting abilities immensely and now continues moving onward and upward captivating folks with his sincere and well-crafted songs under his own name and with his backing band. Whether it's irresistible, fiddle-driven, dancing tunes or honest, heart-wrenching "songwriter" songs, Huber spans the spectrum of 'Roots' music while preferring not to stay within the boundaries of any strict genre classification.

The Yankee Coalition

The Jackpine is your only chance to see the boys from The Yankee Coalition play as they once did back in the days of The Great Northern Bluegrass Festival (Mole Lake, WI).  Tuck Pence is a well renowned musician in his own right, but when backed by Danny Lincoln -banjo wizard and pedal steel extraordinaire, Joe Cronick -alias "mandolin man", the uncle of Bluegrass-  G.T. "Doghouse" Hauser, and Donny Lincoln, it is a show not to be missed!

Insomniac Gypsy is an original, bluegrass-infused, high-energy string band, infusing bluegrass with jazz, funk, and rock to come up with a completely different sound all their own. Denny Vanesky’s song writing takes center stage as he conjures up songs about his colorful life and the people and experiences he has met with along the way. His raspy and intense vocals are that of a backwoods storyteller,  and his playing-with-fire, hot picking guitar style is as flavorful as a Kentucky barbecue. Rounding out the band are the multi-talented Gypsies, whose playing is always a blend of technical basting and improvised seasoning. Good tasting, dance-around-the-fire nourishment!
